The induction-heated furnace was designed for the preparation of the massive and well-graphitized pyrolytic graphite. The substrate for deposition and the crucible for heat treatment were directly heated by induction heating. In order to attain the required temperature, the frequency of the HF generator was computed to be 250 kHz from the skin depth of the substrate and the crucible and its output power was determined to be 15 kW from the estimation of the thermal losses in the furnace. The pyrolytic graphite deposit of 12 × 170 × 6 mm3 was obtained at the deposition temperature of 2000°C, which was attained with the output power of 9 kW. For heat treatment of the deposit, the output power of 8 kW and 15 kW were needed to maintain the temperature of 3000°C and 3400°C, respectively. The samples after heat treatment exhibit similar physical properties as the single crystal graphite. The details of the structure of the furnace and the practical techniques for deposition and heat treatment are described.
