Specific abso ption rate constant, ka, is one of the important factors for the evaluation of uv-irradiation in photochemical reaction rate of air pollutants by sun light and that by artificial light in experimental work.<BR>The quantity of solar radiation received in the lower atmosphere is dependent on the air mass, m, and the amount of ozone, (O3), dust, D, and precipitable water vapor, W, in the atmosphere. Direct and scattering uv-intensity per unit horizontal cross section in the lower atmosphere was calculated theoretically and measured by UV-Meter for various values of the abovementioned factors. Direct uv-intensity measured coincided with the theoretical values. As for the scattering part, observed values have the same qualitative tendencies with the calculated, but the measured value is 1. 5times as larger as that calculated.<BR>Specific absorption rate constant depends not only on the amount of radiation received, but on a substance in question, because it depends on the absorption coefficient of the substance. k<I>a</I> of solar radiation by sulfur dioxide, k<I>a, so</I>2, was calculated for the various values of m, (O3), D and W. Calculational results show that the spectrum of k<I>a</I>, SO2 has a peak at about 3100Å and wavelength at peak shifted to longer as the values of in, (O3), D or W increase, and that the value of ka, <I>so</I>2 is most remarkably influenced by (O3) encept for m.
