More than thirty species of japanese herbages were subjected to 0.25 ppm ozone in the daytime each 5 hours a day, and the responses were recorded semiquantitatively (Table 1). The injury was usually restricted to the mature leaves.<BR>Microscopic examination showed that the initial lesion of the leaf affected by ozone was in the palisade cell layer. But the lesion sometimes extended to the spongy cell layer and further to under-layer, especially in plant species the leaf of which is thin.<BR>For the assessment of the injury-grade, plant species were divided into five groups according to the period of time required to produce incidental spot-like lesion on the upper surface of the leaves comprising about 5% of the total.<BR>Assembling the present and the previous results obtained in the authors' laboratory, a tentative list comprising more than 70 species of japanese plants with reference to ozone sensitivity in summer season was constructed for convenient use in the field (Table 2).
