Dispersion of Aircraft Emissions in the Vicinity of the Osaka International Airport

Air pollution from aircrafts as well as noise pollution has become a serious social problem in Japan, since most of airports are surrounded by urban or light industrial areas. To examine the effects of exhaust emissions of aircraft to the health of people, the dispersed pollutant concentration was measured in the vicinity of the Osaka International Airport. Exhaust gas emitted on the taxiway is dispersed by wind and flow into the area as a large stream moving with corresponding aircraft taxiing. As an index of pollutants, carbon monoxide (CO) is chosen, since not only it is a stable chemical, but there are little difficulties in its analysis except for large time lag. The time-dependent concentration of CO was measured at several points. The relations such as CO concentration vs. aircraft movement and meteorological conditions are derived from these results.<BR>To examine the concentration of hydrocarbon components, exhaust gas was sampled at a point near a taxiway and their correlations with CO were obtained.<BR>In addition, the dispersion process is simulated by a mathematical model. A moving source is considered in the model and many puffs are emitted from it at a constant interval. Calculated results are compared with the observed ones, and satisfactory agreements are obtained between them. By extending these calculations for arbitrary points, the isopleths of CO peaks are estimated. The peak concentrations of hydrocarbon components are obtained relatively by comparing the above correlations to CO isopleths.
