Absorption spectra of the pyrazolone-aromethine and styryl dye in the stretched sheet of polyvinylalcohol were observed by the polarized of light in the region of 300-700-mμ, to determine the directions of the transition of two bands in each dye. The direction of the transition moment corresponding to the respective absorption band was estimated by its optical density-ratio RD (=Dii/DI). The angle between two directions in one molecule indicated to be nearly agreement with that of the model constructed using the atomic radii and the bond angles. The dichroic experimental results showed that the direction of the first band is connected dialkylamino nitrogen atom and carbonyl oxygen atom, and that of the second band the same nitrogen atom and 2-N atom in the pyrazolone ring. This assignment is just opposite to that of P. W. Vittum et al.(1) But we can also interpret experimental results of the displacement of the absorption maxima caused by substituents 1- or 3-position in the pyrazolone-azomethine dye.
