The Effects of Microorganisms on the Permeability of Soils

It is well known that, when abundant nutritious water is supplied to soil, microorganisms increase, their metabolic products are integrated and eventually the hydraulic conductivity of the soil decreases. This phenomenon is related to natural purification of water in soils and may have an influence on the hydrological processes. However, the effects of microorganisms on the permeability of soils have been studied only for the disturbed soil or packed soil in laboratories.<BR>The purposes of this paper are:(i) to investigate the effects of microorganisms on the hydraulic conductivities of undisturbed soils; and (ii) to compare their effects among forest soil, paddy field soil and upland field soil at each depth.<BR>All the undisturbed samples were divided into two groups. One group was sterilized by using 0.2% sodium azide and the other was treated with nutritious water having 1% saccharose. The hydraulic conductivities of the latter group markedly decreased with time compared with those of the former group. Subsurface soil of the paddy field showed maximum discripancy of the hydraulic conductivities between sterile and non-sterile treatments, while the surface soil of the three fields showed minimum discripancy.<BR>The main cause of these decreases and discrepancies of the hydraulic conductivities are attributed to the activities of microorganisms in soils.
