To evaluate the effects of acute protein loading on the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), albumin excretion rate (AER) and urinary excretions of 6-keto-PGF1α and TXB2, ten healthy female volunteers and ten female diabetics were studied before and after eating a meal containing 0.8g protein/kg body weight in the form of cooked beef, cooked pork, tuna fish, boiled egg white, cooked beef with EPA or cooked pork with EPA on separate days. In normal subjects and diabetic patients, GFR rose significantly (p<0.005) after ingestion of beef, pork, tuna fish, beef with EPA or pork with EPA. AER increased significantly (p<0.05) after ingestion of beek or pork. Urinary 6-keto-PGF1α excretion increased significantly (p<0.05) after administration of beef, pork, tuna fish, beef with EPA or pork with EPA in healthy volunteers. Urinary TXB2 excretion rose significantly (p<0.05) following beef or pork loading. Our results suggest that GFR and AER responses to acute protein loading may differ depending on the protein ingested and that these responses may be induced by renal prostaglandins.
