The present survey is the third such survey conducted, at ten year intervals, since 1972. As with the previous questionnaire survey, it was conducted in 934 medical facilities nationwide which place high priority on diabetes, and 665 Diabetes circles affiliated with the Japan Association for Diabetes Care and Education (JADCE). The majority of diabetics were diagnosed by a 75g oral glucose tolerance test, using the criteria recommended by the Japan Diabetes Society (JDS). The rate of adopting selfmonitoring of blood glucose reached 96% in 1992, showing about a three-fold increase from 10 years previously. The last twenty years have seen increases in the rate of conducting diabetes classes, the availability of educational inpatient facilities and the number of Diabetes circles affiliated with JADCE. Although the number of small membership Diabetes circles held by general practitioners has increased, problems in educational activities are frequently encountered. The appearance of multiple medical facilities-based Diabetes circles, as a result of cooperation between general practitioners and hospitals, has attracted attention. Sixty one percent of facilities have doctors who are accredited by JDS. Education of paramedical staff is conducted in 87% of facilities. The increased involvement of the JDS and JADCE in educational activities is anticipated.
