To investigate osteopenia in spontaneously diabetic WBN/Kob rats with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, plasma levels of hormones regulating bone mineral metabolism and total bone mineral content (BMC) were measured. Plasma calcium level was significantly decreased, and plasm Al-p levels and urinary calcium excretion were significantly increased in diabetic WBN/Kob rats.Plasma calcitonin level was significantly decreased but plasma PTH level was not increased in diabetic WBN/Kob rats. The plasma level of 1, 25 (OH) 2D in diabetic WBN/Kob rats was significantly lower than in control rats, although there was no significant difference in plasma 25 (OH) D and 24, 25 (OH)2D levels.Plasma vitamin K1 and bone Gla-protein levels in diabetic WBN/Kob rats were also significantly lower than in control rats. The total BMC of the femur as measured by a dual energy x-ray adsorptiometer in diabetic rats was 336.6 ±22.6 mg/bone, which was significantly lower than the value of 379.7 ±36.0 mg/bone in control rats.<BR>In conclusion, diabetic osteopenia with a low plasma level of 1, 25 (OH) 2D was observed in diabetic WBN/Kob rats also, it is possible that chronic malabsorption of calcium and fat-soluble vitamins due to exocrine pancreatic insufficiency worsens so-called diabetic osteopenia.
