It has been shown that 1, 5-AG in the serum of diabetics decreases with bad diabetic control, and increases with good control, and thus can be used as a control index for diabetes mellitus. To evaluate whether 1, 5-AG could be used as a control index for diabetes mellitus during pregnancy, we measured serum 1, 5-AG in 82 pregnant diabetic women by using a gas chromatograph.
The average level of serum 1, 5-AG in 54 healthy non-pregnant controls was 19.3±5.5 mg/l.In normal pregnant women, the average level was 11.8±4.3mg/l in the first trimester, and decreased during pregnancy. In pregnant diabetics, average serum 1, 5-AG was 2.8±2.6mg/l in the first trimester, but remained low and showed no change during the rest of pregnancy.
We confirmed that serum 1, 5-AG cannot be used as a diabetic control index in pregnant women in contrast to in non-pregnant diabetic women, since it decreases during pregnancy, and it remains low and shows no changes different from blood glucose and HbA1 in pregnant diabetics.
