Stress has been regarded as a factor in the pathogenesis or deterioration of dibetes mellitus. We encountered some cases with both stress erythrocytosis and glucose intolerance. The prevalence of stress erythrocytosis in the diabetics was therefore compared with that in general patients, and the clinical features of the patients with both stress erythrocytosis and glucose intolerance were reviewed.<BR>Stress erythrocytosis was observed in 6 out of 2, 500 patients with diabetes mellitus and in 3 out of 5, 000 general patients. The difference between these two prevalences was not significant. However, 2 out of the latter 3 cases showed glucose intolerance. Stress erythrocytosis was thought to be frequently accompanied by glucose intolerance. The clinical features of the stress erythrocytosis in the present patients with both stress erythrocytosis and glucose intolerance resembled those in patients with stress erythrocytosis only. The glucose intolerance of most of the patients was mild and no diabetic triopathy was found in the patients with both stress erythrocytosis and glucose intolerance.
