The effectiveness of diabetes education and hospitalization on the home management of juvenile diabetes was evaluated. One hundred and thirty-two (132) guardians of diabetic children, who were registered members of the Childhood Diabetes Association in western Japan, were contacted by a mailed questionnaire.
The questionnaire consisted of 30 multiple-choice questions, 10 concerned with general knowledge and the other 20 related to specific knowledge necessary for successful home management of diabetic children.
The response rate was 81.8%. The largest proportion of responders correctly answered 7 of the 10 general knowledge questions, irrespective of participation in a diabetes education program.
No difference in this proportion was noted between persons charged with the care of diabetic children receiving hospital treatment and those of diabetic children not undergoing hospital treatment. Patterns of correct answers to individual general knowledge questions were similar for all groups; participants and nonparticipants in a diabetes education program, and with and without hospitalization. The largest proportion of responders also correctly answered 13 of the specific knowledge questions, irrespective of education program participation. Here again, there was no noticable difference in this proportion between responders with and without hospitalization experience. No striking differences were observed between participants and nonparticipants or between groups with and without hospitalization in percentages of correct answers to individual questions.
The current system of instruction in management of juvenile diabetes may not be valuable in home management of this condition. Improvements in the instruction system and other educational facilities are necessary.
