To elucidate the status of the dry mouth population in Gifu City and its neighboring areas, the presence and degree of subjective symptoms of dry mouth and stimulated salivary flow rate (SSFR) were evaluated by means of visual analog scale for xerostomia (VAS-X) and modified Saxon test, respectively. The subjects were 784 individuals, consisting of 263 males and 521 females, from among the participants in annual events for oral health. Their ages ranged from 6 to 90 years, with mean of 47.7 years. The mean of SSFR was 3.71g/2min, and 14.4% of the subjects had SSFR under 2.00g/2min. The SSFR was significantly lower in the old (60 years old or older) generation than in the middle-aged (30-59 years old) and young (29 years old or younger) generations, as well as in females than in males (p<0.05). In the same way that prevalence of the persons with SSFR under 2.00g/2min was significantly greater in older people than in younger people, and in females than in males (p<0.05), so was VAS-X. Prevalence of persons with subjective symptoms (VAS-X>0) was 42.0%. Only 16.4% of the persons with subjective symptoms and 13.0% of the persons without subjective symptoms (VAS-X=0) had decreased SSFR under 2.00g/2min, suggesting the presence of dry mouth with no decreased SSFR, as well as dry mouth without subjective symptoms. With the tentative definition for dry mouth being that either SSFR should be under 2.00g/2min or VAS-X should be over 0, the observed prevalence of dry mouth was 49.5%; it was 45.6% for males and 51.4% for females. A more appropriate definition should be established for dry mouth.
