The purpose of this study was to investigate the process of bone formation by combined graft of HA granules and pedicle tibula periosteum into the abdominal subcutaneous tissue in rats.
Thirty rats were divided into 3 groups 1) HAperiosteum group, 2) HA-muscle group, and 3) periosteum group (control group). Histologic examination was done 3 days and 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks after grafting.
The results were as follows:
1) New bone was formed with endochondral ossification in both the HA-periosteum and the periosteum groups. The results indicated that the periosteum had osteoinduction activity.
2) Both in the HA-periosteum and periosteum groups, cartilage formation was observed 3 days, followed by active ossification 1 week and formation of mature circular bone 4 to 8 weeks after grafting. The extent of hard tissue of the HA-periosteum group was better than that of the periosteum group.
3) In the HA-muscle group, cartilage and bone formation was not seen during the experimental period, which indicated that HA had no osteoinductivity.
4) These findings suggested that combined graft of HA granules and pedicle periosteum could formed the bone into the soft tissue.
