Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare, spindle cell tumor generally associated with the serosal surface, especially the pleura. Recently, SFT has been reported in the extrapleural site, including the head and neck region. A case of SFT ari sing in the cheek is presented herein.
The patient was a 57-year-old female complaining of a 2 year history of a painless mass in the cheek. Due to the clinical diagnosis of benign tumor, the tumor was excised in 1990. Since the initial pathological diagnosis was malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH), wide radical resection was done again. After strict immunohistochemical examination in 1996, tumor cells were strongly positive for vimentin and CD34, and the final pathological diagnosis was changed to SFT. There has been no sign of recurrence or metastasis of the tumor as of 8 years after the operation.
This is the third known case of SFT originating from the cheek.
