Fifty-five patients with parotid gland tumors and fourteen with submandibular gland tumors were evaluated by high-resolution real time linear scanners using transducer frequencies of 7.5 MHz. The results were compared with clinical, surgical and pathological data.
A comparative study of ultrasonography was carried out to assess respective roles in the investigation of salivary gland tumors and to determine if equivalent or complementary information can be obtained.
In the cases of salivary gland tumors, the detectability of ultrasonography was 100%. The three signs, that were acoustic shadows, echogenic spots and coarseness in the ultrasonographic images of tumors, were used to decide whether a lesion was benign or malignant were selected. As a result the sensitivity and the specificity of ultrasonography was found to be 88% and 98% respectively.
It should be noted that ultrasonography was useful for the evaluation of salivary gland tumors and that a benign tumor could be distinguished from a malignant tumor by ultrasound.
