Ameloblastoma usually shows multilocular or unilocular radiolucency with a well-defined border in a radiograph. Similar findings are found in other lesions such as primordial cyst, odontogenic keratocyst, and dentigerous cyst. The purpose of this study was to evaluate statistically the differences in radiographic findings between ameloblastoma and such cystic lesions. For this study thirtythree cases with ameloblastoma, ten with primordial cyst, twenty with odontogenic keratocyst and thirty with dentigerous cyst in the mandible were selected.The panoramic, occlusal, and periapical radiographs coupled with posteroanterior views were examined retrospectively.The results showed that ameloblastoma was significantly different from cystic lesions in terms of 1) locularity, 2) shape of the border, 3) bone expansion, and 4) effects on teeth involved in the lesion.No significant difference was found in radiograph between plexiform and follicular types of ameloblastoma.Plexiform type was observed in younger patients than the older ones. The results indicated that ameloblastoma could be radiographically differentiated from cystic lesions showing similar findings.
