Two cases suspicious of so-called branchiogenic carcinoma were presented.
The first case, a 14-year-old male, exhibited swelling of the left retro-infraauricular region which has persisted for 8 years.A cystic lesion was suspected by the clinical and CT appearances. The extirpated material possessed a cavity surrounded by dense connective tissues, and the thickened wall protruded to the cavity in the deep portion of the lesion where squamous cell carcinoma was microscopically considered to be.Postoperative chemo-radiotherapy was applied, and no recurrence has been observed.
The second case, a 57-year-old man, complained of right upper neck painless swelling persisting for 16 months.A solid, elastic hard mass was palpated under the sternocleidomastoid muscle.Being suspected as a benign tumor, the lesion was removed, but histopathologically diagnosed as undifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma.Chemo-radiotherapy was added, but metastasis to the inferior neck lymph nodes became visible 6 months after the operation. No continuation was observed after the second operation.
Association of the salivary glands or thyroid gland with the lesions was not observed, and there were no abnormalities except for each lesion could be detected in both cases. Therefore, these lesions were considered to be a branchiogenic carcinoma;however, a long follow up should be performed for the final judgement.
