A Study of Parotid Gland Size Using CT.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the range of variation in size of the normal parotid gland on computed tomography (CT) scans. CT scans of 108 subjects (65 males and 43 females) with healthy parotid glands ranging in age from 18 to 83 years were reviewed. The maximum transverse cross-sectional area of the parotid gland (MTCAP) was determined, and its relationship to the height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) and age of each subject was analyzed. 1) There was no difference between left and right parotid glands in MTCAP. 2) MTCAP was significantly larger in males than in females. 3) There was high correlation between MTCAP and BMI (r =0.72), although MTCAP was not correlated with height or age. 4) 95 % confidence interval of the predicted value of MTCAP for BMI was made. We found the data acquired in this study to be useful in the diagnosis of patients with parotid gland swelling such as parotitis and hypertrophy.
