Suppurative arthritis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a rare condition, due to recent development of antibiotics.
A case of acute suppurative arthritis of the right TMJ in a 52-year-old man is reported. There have been some cases with unknown pathways of infection. However, in our case, the bacteria may be introduced into the joint by direct spread from the pterygopalatine fossa abscess. W e aspirated pus from the abscess and a-streptococcus was recognized in the bacteriological test. Furthermore, this patient suffered from the cerebral abscess followed by pterygopalatine fossa abscess.
Treatments including antiinflammatory therapy and opening mouth rehabilitation were given. The patient has a good clinical course without ankylosis of the TMJ.
