In twelve cases of oral cancer, maxillofacial defects were reconstructed using pectoralis major myocutaneous flap. The ages of the patients ranged from 39 to 78 years. There were 7 males and 5 females. Primary sites of cancer were gingiva of mandible 5 cases, floor of mouth 3 cases and tongue and buccal mucosa 2 cases, respectively.
The pectoralis major myocutaneous flaps were versatile for immediate reconstruction of various large defects following resection of oral cancer, because of its abundant tissue, excellent blood supply and anatomical proximity. In eleven patients, satisfactory results were obtained. Partial flap necrosis occurred in one patient, resulting in orocutaneous fistulae.
No correlation had been observed between prior and/or posterior irradiation and flap complication.
