The thickening index of human lingual arteries (area of intima/area of media×100)(TI) was examined.
After the autopsies, tongues of 157 cases were dissected and fixed in 20% neutral formalin. The transversely cut segments from the anterior, middle and posterior parts of the tongues were processed and then embedded in paraffin. Histologic sections were cut 5μ thickness each. The TI was calculated on the elastica van Gieson-stained slides by using the image analyzer system (KONTRON, IBAS-2000).
The TI increased in the anterior, middle and posterior parts of the tongue according to aging (p<0.01). The TI from cases of diabetes mellitus were comparatively higher than that of other diseases. There were significant differences between the TI from cases of diabetes mellitus and that of cases of lung cancer in the anterior part of the tongue (p<0.05), and between the TI from diabetes mellitus and that of chronic hepatitis in the middle part of the tongue (p<0.05). There seems to be a correlation between TI and atherosclerotic degree of the aorta. No correlations have been observed between TI and serum cholesterol level and systolic blood pressure of these cases, at the first visit to our hospital.
