Four genera and 8 species of tabanid flies were recorded along the upper basin of the Nishibetsu River in the eastern part of Hokkaido during middle July and late August. <I>Haematopota tristis</I> was the most dominant species, comprising 94.2% of the total catch by CO2-lured mosquito-net traps. Flies were most abundant at the forest site of the uppermost stream. While at the three pasture sites of the lower stream, the number decreased to less than 36.1% of the forest site in the peak occurrence.
