Sucking injury on apple fruit caused by the large brown cicada, Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata MOTS., was observed in the Tsugaru district, Aomori Prefecture in 1983. Although the damage had been observed in southern apple producing regions of Japan, this was the first record from this prefecture. The present damage was concentrated in areas with non-volcanic soil where the cicada maintaines a comparatively high population every year. Examination of damaged fruits suggested that the cicada tended to choose the fruit in the upper crown of tree and to suck sap from the lower part of fruit. Where each fruit was being wrapped with a paper bag, the damage was obviously biased to larger fruits within a tree. Since fruit growth abnormally advanced in 1983, a certain proportion of fruits possibly came into cnntact with the inner surface of paper bag earlier than in the normal year, thus causing coincidence with the flying period of the cicada probably, such fruits becameelmore vulnerable to sucking of the cicada from the outside of the bag.
