In summer 1976, new bacterial disease of muskmelon occured in Yamagata Prefecture. This disease attacked leaf blades, fruits and stems, and caused irregular black spot, fruit rot and stem rot. Eleven isolates from diseased leaves, fruits and stems were uniform in their characteristics tested. In the inoculation tests, these isolates infected cucumber and muskmelon, and showed similar symptoms with that of Pseudomonas lachrymans. These isolates showed positive reactions in the serological tests with antiserum of P. lachrymans, The bacteriological characteristics of these isolates were identical with those of P. lachrymans in our tests, and agreed with the previous descriptions of P. lachrymans. From above results, we identified the causal bacterium as Pseudomonas lachrymans (E. F. Smith et Bryan) Carsner.
