A root and crown rot disease of tomatoes caused by Fusarium oxysporum different from the classical vascular wilt has been observed under vinyl-house conditions in southern Hokkaido.<BR>Following the setting of fruits, leaves of affected plants may become chlorotic or the plants may wilt and die. These roots may become subject to brown or black rot and only the roots and crown are discolored in the vascular-bundle.<BR>Results of isolation from infected tomatoes showed that it was caused by <I>Fusarium oxysporum, </I> and then it was isolated more from the roots than the stems. The fungus was completly recovered from the inoculated plants and its symptoms resemble that which occurrs in vinyl-house grown plants.<BR>Fusarium wilt-susceptible and-resistance varities (race 1, J2) are both s sceptible to this strain of Fusarium and probably it should be named race J3 (Komada et al. 1973) of the fungus, <I>Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici.</I> In the experiments with roil temperatures, the occurrance of the disease is stimulated at 18°C, but limited at 25 °C.
