With the purpose to pursue abnormalities of the iron metabolism in tuberculosis we studied fluctuations in the iron absorption ability in the stomach of rabbits with experimental tuberculosis. Rabbits were infected by intra-lung inoculation of 30mg bovine tuberculous bacilli of the Miwa strain, The serum-iron content and binding capacity were estimated before and 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks after the inoculation. Both the serum-iron content and iron binding capacity were down by the second week of the infection and showed minimum values by the sixth week.On the eighth week when the iron metabolism was markedly abnormal, the stomach was exposed by laparotomy and, after washing the inside of the stomach, a drain was made by inserting a vinyl tube and through this drain 60cc of 0.1% ferrous chloride solution was placed in the stomach. After putting the iron in the stomach, pH and serum-iron content were estimated hourly. As the result a rapid decrease in the iron poured into the stomach, the same as in the case of normal control rabbits could be recognized up to the third hour, but thereafter the decrease completely csased. However, compared with the control, the cessation of the decrease took place somewhat earlier. On the other hand, the iron migration into serum required a markedly longer to reach the maximum concentration as compared with that of the control. In this instance the maximum serum-iron concentration in the rabbits with experimental tuberculosis as well as in the control roughly coincided with the binding capacity of serum. The pH in the stomach at the time when the decrease in stomach iron ceases was identical with that of the control. From these findings it is assumed that the decrease in the iron absorption capacity from the digestive canal can not be considered as the important factor of abnormality in tuberculosis but rather the slow-down in the transporting capacity of the absorbed iron due to the decrease in the binding capacity of serum is one of the causes.
