Effect of acid treatment on illite

The change of particle size and disorder of illite by treatment with 4 N hydrochloric acid was examined by X-ray diffraction method. The value of particle size of the original specimen is obtained as 89 A, and it changes to 53 A after treatment for 9 hours. Disorder also seems to decrease with increasing duration of treatment.<BR>The change of activation energy and order of reaction was studied by the Freeman and Carroll's method. The value of activation energy of the untreated specimen is 30.7 kcal/mole and it decreases to 22.9 kcal/mole, when treated for 9 hours. Order of reaction is 1 for all the specimens.<BR>The results obtained in this work seem to show that the mechanism of the acid dissolution is complicated complex of homogeneous and heterogeneous processes.
