The characteristics exhibited by a vehicle with front and rear wheels when it runs in traction differ largely between the two cases of a hard and a soft ground, such as a paved road and the desert or a farmland respectively. It is known in this connection that when the vehicle runs on a soft ground in particular, the tractive force required becomes a minimum if the center-of-gravity is positioned at a certain point some what back ward of the middle of the fore and aft direction of the vehicle. The resistance which the wheels receive from the ground is far larger in a soft than a hard ground. Therefore, if the position of center-of-gravity in the vehicle can be so constantly maintained that the tractive force is a minimum (i.e. the optimal position of center-of-gravity), it would extremely make for the reduction of energy consumption. For this purpose, a new system by the model of a vehicle was developed which searches automatically for the optimal position of center-of-gravity varying with the wheel shape, the kind of a road surface, etc. and shifts automatically the ceter-of-gravity of the vehicle to the optimal position. This system for adjusting the center-of-gravity position is described in this paper. With this system, the effects of a soft ground on the resistance of a vehicle may also be extensively clarified.
