A specialised DEM method for the failure analysis of shell structures made of steel is presented. Hereby, a shell is represented by an equivalent lattice. The in-plane stiffness of shells is represented by a lattice of energy equivalentnormal springs, and the bending stiffness of walls is represented by bending springs. The ability of the method tosimulate highly non-linear situations is demonstrated by an analysis of a cylinderpinched perpendicularly to its axisby a force couple. A case study was carried out on a pipe in the Fengyuan region in Taiwan that sustained damageduring the Chi-Chi Earthquake.
