Influence of Diet for the Growth of Rat Mandible

Male SPF Wistar-Imaichi strain rats produced in Imaichi Institute for Animal Reproduction were used for this study. The animals were weand at the age of 3 weeks and were divided into 4 groups. For twelve weeks, up to the age of 15 weeks, the animals in the 1st group were provided with the autoclave-processed solid food, the 2nd group with the mixture of assorted food and solid food, the 3 rd group with the solid food, and the 4th group with the powdered food. From these animals thus bred, the specimens of mandible were prepared. On each specimen, the height from the bottom of mandible at 7 sites and the length from the end-point of mandible at 6 sites were measured. By using the data obtained, calculation of basic statistic for each diet group and for each measurement, comparison between the mean values of each diet group by analysis of varience, principal component analysis starting with correlation matrix, a radar control chart for each diet group with the autoclave-processed solid food group as the standard, and discsiminant analysis for the discrimination of each diet group were conducted. As the result, it was found that the growth of mandible in the powdered food group had been retarded so much that it could make difference in result of discriminant analysis for identification of strain.
