A Fact-Finding Survey on Pet Shops Dealing in Dogs

The survey was conducted on 25 pet shops which had registered their telephone numbers in the pet shop (dogs) section of the telephon directory, and which are under the jurisdiction of the Miyazaki Public Helth Center. The results that follow cover: type of operation ; sanitary control of animals and facilities; complaints from neighbors; and guidance for purchasers.<BR>1. The 25 pet shops are classified into four types of operations: 10 shops specialize in animal sales; 3 specialize in trimming, 11 operate both sales and trimming; and 1 is in another form of business.<BR>2. The main problems concerning the sanitary control of facilities are: the facilities do not have a structure which is easy to clean; many shops are not disinfected; shop owners do not have a strong desire to undertake measures to cope with foul odors, barking, and harmful insects which surround the facilities; and containers for waste matter are not suitably covered.<BR>3. Many dogs kept by the pet shops are not registered nor innoculated against rabies, despite the legal requirement to go so.<BR>4. A large number of animal lovers visit these pet shops. We propose to introduce a system to have these pet shops educate pet lovers on the knowledge and manners required for animal breeding.
