Studies were carried out on the nutritional condition of the present Japanese which had been known to be rather good. It was presumed that there might be differences in individual dietetic structure among the present Japanese when these people were considered as masses under the influence of various socioecological factors. A total of 466 persons were asked to be examinees. They consisted of students of a junior college and their families. An examination was performed to determine the amounts ingested per head per day of 18 foodstuffs forming a daily diet for 3 days in October, 1978. Age and sex were used as socioecological factors to dividl the examinees into four populations; that is, young male, young female, adult male, and adult female. The whole population was suljected to main the 18 foodstuffs ingested with variates. Two main components were extracted as factors determining the dictetic structure of the respective population. One of them was the Japanese-style meal versus the Western-style meal, and the other the light meal versus the heavy meal. Then the value of main component for an individual was examined in each of the four populations. As a result, there was a significant difference in the mean of the value of main component between any two of the four populations. In conclusion, it was possible to clarify the differences in dietetic structure between the sexes and between the young and adult persons.
