Recent experimental and theoretical studies revealed various ralaxation mechanisms operating during deexcitation of photoexcited states in non-metallic solids. Especially, a wide range of phenomena in insulators as well as in semiconductors can be understood as a manifestation of strong electron-phonon interaction during the relaxation processes. Photographic processes in the silver halides are discussed in terms of the electron-phonon coupling and the importance of electronic relaxation coupled with phonons as well as with imperfections is pointed out for the silver halide photography.
