For the purpose of investigating the role of basic and acidic groups in the acrylamide-acrylic acid-2methyl-l-vinylimidazole-copolymers, the rate of physical ripending of AgCl crystals, in presence of the copolymers, having different compositions, were measured at various ionic strength.
In the case of lower ionic strength and lower pH value, adsorption by Coulomb forces, between positively charged dissociated imidazole groups and negatively charged AgCl crystal surfaces, take place. But this adsorption disappears in the region of higher ionic strength.
In the region of higher pH value, when the ionic strength is low, negatively charged dissociated carboxyl groups hinder the absorption of imidazole groups onto the AgCl surface, but this hindering action cannot be observed, when the ionic strength becomes higher.
