Since the laser was first developed by Maiman in 1960, the application of laser irradiation with many materials has been studied. Recently, there has been considerable progress in the crystalline structure change of apatite at high temperature. This paper describes about the attempt to study the crystallographic alteration and decomposition product in the human dental enamel powder irradiated by the Nd-YAG laser at an energy density of about 3000J/cm2. In the X-ray diffraction patterns of fused and resolidified enamel powder after Nd-YAG laser irradiation, a few peaks of α-TCP were observed. The irradiation conditions of the laser were as follows: <BR>1) Output of 50W, 10mm in diameter, irradiation time of 0.3 seconds. 40times every 5 minutes. <BR>2) Output of 400W, 4.1mm in diameter, irradiation time of 1 seconds. <BR>α-TCP is the formation of the high temperature phase of apatite .. . But, the X-ray diffraction patterns of the enamel powder exposed to laser at 28J/cm2 for 1 seconds and 28J/cm2 for 108 seconds, showed no changes.
