With a view to elucidate the mechanism of the pellicle formation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ESCA) was used in this paper to investigate the adsorption of the salivary proteins by the enamel. To determine the time-dependent change of the elements adsorbed on to the enamel surface, the photoelectron lines of Ca2p, P2p, C1s, N1s, and O1s, were measured by ESCA. <BR>Conclusions obtained were as described below: <BR>1) The peak intensities of the Ca2p, and P2p, spectra of the sample surface decreased with time, especially after the exposure to saliva for 30 minutes. Conversely, the N1s and C1s intensities increased with time. <BR>2) The C1s spectrum 2was further separated mainly into 3 peaks, CH, -COO and _??_C=O, by scanning of higher resolusion. The peak intensities of -COO and_??_C=0 considerably increased compared with the CH intensity after the exposure to saliva.
