The purpose of this study was to clarify the influence of hereditary and environmental factors on the shape of the basal arch using the Twin Method, after it was verified that the shape of the basal arch could be determined by the roentogenogram of the dental cast. The samples were 30 pairs of Japanese twins, consisting of 22 pairs of monozygotic twins and 8 pairs of like-sexed dizygotic twins. The shape of the basal arch was compared with the shape of the dental arch using the maxillary dental casts. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The maxillary basal arch was influenced by the hereditary factors more strongly than the dental arch. 2) The anterior basal arch was influenced by the hereditary factors more strongly than the lateral basal arch. 3) In the maxillae of the monozygotic twins, the differences of the shape between each pair of twins were more intense in the dental arch than in the basal arch. This tendency was observed markedly in the anterior portion. 4) The differences of the shape in the maxillary basal arch between each pair of monozygotic twins increased with age.
