In twenty ases of gingivitis and stomatitis gargling of pen icillin-G crystal solution was used with favorable clinical results, and fluctuation of the saliva level of penicillin was investigated after it had been administered.
Marked effect was seen in 14 cases but not so in other six cases. In all of the former cases symptoms disappeared within three days on the average, while the penicillin gargling was ineffective in the latter cases showing no change in the symptoms even by its administration for more than three days.
Effective concentration of penicillin in the saliva continued for about one hour after its administration. No effect could be noticed in case of aphthous stomatitis by penicillin gargling. Black discoloration was found on the surface of the tongue of the patients penicillin had been administered.
