The method of Nd-YAG laser irradiation for hemostasis at laparoscopic liver biopsy.

As to the hemostatic efficiency for laparoscopic liver biopsy, two methods of Nd-YAG laser irradiation and gelatin sponge were comparatively studied. Nd-YAG laser irradiation was performed in 5 cases of liver cirrhosis, 2 cases of chronic hepatitis and acute hepatitis, one case of metastatic liver cancer and idiopathic portal hypertension respectively. The mean irradiation energy of Nd-YAG laser was 212J. Mean hemostatic time of Nd-YAG laser irradiation was 3 minutes, being significantly shortened, compared with 13 minutes of gelatin sponge method. Any complications, such as fever and abdominal pain, were not observed during or after Nd-YAG laser irradiation. Further more values of complete blood cell count and liver function test revealed no significant change. The present method of Nd-YAG laser irradiation for the hemostasis of the laparo-scopic liver biopsy was proved safe and very useful, and it will be possibly applied in the therapy of small liver cell cancer.
