Comparison was made of blood gases, acid base balance and blood pressure during halothane (H), ether (E), halothane-ether mixture-azeotrope (FOE), halothane-nitro oxide (GOF) and ether-nitro oxide (GOE) anesthesia in 50 dogs.<BR>In four groups (H, E, FOE, GOE), the arterial blood showed decrease of pH 0.05 to 0.100 and increase PaCO2 of 5 to 10 mmHg during inhalation anesthesia. Therefore, there was a slight respiratory acidosis. Meanwhile, PaO2 increased remarkably during H, E and FOE anesthesia. These parameters returned to the preanesthetic levels after spontaneous respiration.<BR>Effects of inhalation anesthetics on arterial blood pressure was the most in H, followed by FOE and GOF, and the least in E and GOE.
