Anaesthetic Effects of Althesin in Cats

Althesin which was known of a steroid anaesthetic agent was studied on anaesthetic and hemodynamic effects in cats. Twenty-two cats were used in this study. Two experiments were performed to research the effects of this agent. In the first experiment, hemodynamic effects were studied observing mean arterial pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, body temperature, blood gas and blood pH following administration of Althesin (0.78 ml/kg iv., 1.56 ml/kg i.m.) . In the second experiment, the ovaro-hysterectomy was performed under anaesthesia of Althesin (1.56 ml/kg i.m.) for the purpose of clinical use. Results are as follows: 1. Decrease of arterial blood pressure was observed in following administration of Althesin intravenously, and so, using it intravenously, great care must be taken. 2. Decrease of body temperature was observed in both following administration of Althesin intravenously (0.78 ml/kg) and intramuscularly (1.56 ml/kg), respiratory depression was observed apparently intravenously compared with intramuscularly. 3. Under anaesthesia of Althesin, disappearance of abdominal pain sensation and tension were observed, and ovaro-hysterectomy was performed easily. These results suggested that operation of twenty to forty minutes' duration is possible.
