It is necessary for the future of space exploration, especially in the space robotics field, to simulate the dynamics of space mechanical systems on the ground. In order to simulate a micro-gravity environment, we have developed and tested a two-dimensional satelite dynamics simulator which is supported by air cushions. The major characteristic of this dynamics simulator is cable-free so that it can translate and rotate freely over the flat floor without any outside physical connections. We verify the properties of this system with regard to its ability to simulate the dynamics of various space-based mechanical systems, and show the results of preliminary experiments for capturing a failed satellite.
