Presently 3-D CAD (computer-aided design) systems are available for representing 3-D geometry. But technical drawings consisting of orthographical views are still important in design process, and a lot of studies on automatic 3-D solid model generation from orthographical views have been reported. Most of them, however, generates 3-D geometry in the order of vertices, edges, faces, and solids assuming geometrically strict orthographical views, and cannot be applied to some technical drawings with generally used practical abbreviations. The authors point out that abbreviations in technical drawings of mechanical parts preserve geometric information on not 3-D vertices or 3-D edges but 3-D surfaces necessary for manufacturing process. Based on the fact, a new method of surface-oriented 3-D solid model generation from one to six orthographical views is proposed. By implementing the method as prototype software and applying it to some sample drawings, the authors show the effectiveness and possibility of the proposed method.
