Treatment of endometriosis with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogue is associated with several adverse effects secondary to the induced hypoestrogenic state. In particular, the hypoestrogenic state has led to various adverse effects including vasomotor and psychosomatic symptoms. Therefore, add-back therapy has been a necessary component in the treatment of endometriosis to increase compliance. In this study, add-back therapy by conjugated equine estrogen (CEE) combined with GnRH analogue was used in the treatment of 35 patients with endometriosis. As a control, 26 patients were treated with GnRH analogue alone. Vasomotor symptoms of the patients in the addback group were minimized when compared with those in the control group. These results indicated that add-back therapy was beneficial in reducing adverse effects of GnRH analogue treatment. As the symptoms of endometriosis were similarly improved after treatment in both groups, it was concluded that add-back therapy by CEE combined with GnRH analogue is an effective means for the treatment of endometriosis.
