A case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium.

We encountered a rare case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium, which has a poor prognosis and requires the delineation of more effective treatments. The patient was a 54-year-old para 2woman with postmenopausal bleeding who had developed aggressive enlargement of the uterine tumor occupying her pelvic cavity. A specimen obtained by endometrial biopsy led to a diagnosis of neuroendocrine carcinoma because of histological findings such as morphology typical of small cell carcinoma and immunoreactivity for synaptophysin and chromogranin. Blood examination revealed elevated levels of various neuropeptides. The patient's condition was serious and she received the combination chemotherapy with CBDCA 280 mg and CPA 500 mg, but no reduction in the tumor volume was observed. The disease progressed rapidly and she died about 80 days after the onset of symptoms. An autopsy was not performed. [Adv Obstet Gynecol 50 (5): 523-52592, 9, 1998 (H 10.9)]
