Recently, many researches have studied the role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), regarding their function in degradation of the extracellular matrix, in cancer metastasis and invasion. The clinical features of endometriosis are well known, but the mechanism of endometrial prolification, which is similar to that of cancer progression, is poorly understood. The origin and natural history of this desease require further study. This article reviews on the historical and current studies regarding the role of MMPs and tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMPs), particularly as they pertain to the progression of endometriosis.
