Pregnancy and primary biliary cirrhosis: a case report.

Pregnancy is rarely encountered in patients with biliary cirrhosis and only a few cases have been reported in the world literature. Here we describe a pregnant patient that had been diagnosed with PBC. A 31-year-old woman presented general fatigue a year prior to conception. She was diagnosed with stage II PBC and she received ursodeoxycholic acid treatment until she was aware of pregnancy. As a moderate increase of the serum liver enzyme activity was seen in the late second trimester, she was admitted to the hospital. On 35weeks of gestation cesarean section was performed because of prolonged variable deceleration. She gave birth to an otherwise healthy but premature boy weighed 1912g and Apgar scored of 8 and 9 in one and five minutes, respectively. The patient's symptom was relieved after delivery and the liver functions improved by postpartum ursodeoxycholic acid treatment. The association of primary biliary cirrhosis to pregnancy will be discussed and the literature is reviewed. [Adv Obstet Gynecol 49 (1); 1---5, 1997 (H9.1)]
