A case of torsion of the pedicle of an ovarian dermoid cyst in childhood.

We recently treated a 6-year-old girl for torsion of an ovarian tumor. She had had a few episodes of lower abdominal pain, but the discomfort was mild and not prolonged, so it was not considered to be serious. However, after several episodes she was taken to a local physician, who palpated an abdominal mass and referred her to the pediatric department of this hospital. Further examinations revealed an ovarian cyst, so an operation was performed, and torsion of the left ovary was found. Because the ovary showed necrotic changes it was removed along with the left adnexae. The histopathological diagnosis was dermoid cystic adenoma.<BR>In the Japanese literature there are 13 case reports of ovarian dermoid cyst in children. These are reviewed.
