Two cases of mature cystic teratoma of the ovary with elevating SCC Ag level of the sera.

Mature cystic teratoma of the ovary (dermoid cyst) is the most common benign germ cell tumor of its kind. In the rare case of malignant transformation of dermoid cyst, the squamous cell carcinoma type is most common.<BR>In recent years, some reports say that a high level of squamous cell carcinoma associated antigen (SCC Ag) in the sera is useful in diagnosing the malignant transformation of mature cystic teratoma. In this paper, two cases of a dermoid cyst were reported to elevate SCC Ag in the sera, nevertheless no malignant transformation was found in the tumor.<BR>Case 1 is 24 years old, had an over new born head size tumor on left ovary, and her preoperative serum SCC Ag level was 9. 0ng/ml. Case 2 is 28 years old, had a over new born head size tumor on right ovary, and serum SCC Ag was 3.8ng/ml. The histological examination showed the typical mature cystic teratoma. The serum SCC Ag level of both cases rapidly decreased after surgical removal of the tumors. The ABC immunostaining demonstrated the definitive staining of SCC Ag on squamous cell epitherium in the tumor by and SCC Ag monoclonal antibody.<BR>These results suggest that a high level of SCC Ag in sera of patient with dermoid cyst is not necessarily the malignant transformation of these tumors.
